We received word today that a person who took one of our hands only CPR classes resuscitated a cardiac arrest victim and saved his life. We offer a monthly, free hands only CPR class at the office of Louisville Cardiology. This class is free to the public and lasts about 30 minutes in duration. We teach hands only CPR, practice hands only CPR, learn about an automated external defibrillator (AED) and healthy heart living.
The person we taught was traveling in the Philadelphia airport recently and came across a cardiac arrest victim. He remembered the simple steps we taught and he acted and saved the person’s life. First, check the person over and if not breathing call 911. Second, start hands only CPR. Push hard and fast in the center of the victim’s chest at a rate of 100-120 compressions a minute and at a depth of 2 inches. Lastly, send someone to retrieve an AED. I recently travelled through Philly. It is a spacious airport and well supplied with AEDs.
This story proves several things. Anyone can be a life saver. Our classes do not take along time to learn what to do in a cardiac emergency. Hands only CPR is easy to remember. The mission continues to save the lives of cardiac arrest victims. One step at a time, we will get there.
