Busy week for Start the Heart Interns

June 18, 2014 by William Dillon

STHF was a guest on Great Day Live on WHAS 11 TV this morning.  Thanks to Rachel Platt for inviting us on and helping to spread the word on cardiac arrest and hands only CPR.  See our spot on the show with this link http://www.whas11.com/great-day-live/video/Start-the-Heart-Foundation-teaches-CPR-263646221.html

Later in the day 2 of our interns were interviewed by Rachel Platt for the evening news on WHAS11.  The interns were at EVA Bandman Park in Louisville, KY teaching hands only CPR during the Louisville Mtb Series Races tonight.  Here is the link to that video.  http://www.whas11.com/community/Interview-Cardiologist-aims-to-increase-survival-rates-of-heart-attack-victims-263681171.html

Let’s clarify a common mistake.  A heart attack is not the same as a cardiac arrest.  During a heart attack a blockage occurs in the coronary artery and part of the heart muscle does not get oxygen and that area of the heart muscle dies.  It is a cardiac emergency that requires immediate attention.  Most heart attacks do not lead to a cardiac arrest but they can be a cause of cardiac arrest.  A cardiac arrest occurs when the hearts natural rhythm stops.  The person immediately collapses without a pulse or BP.  If something is not done immediately that person will die.  A heart attack is a common cause of a cardiac arrest.

Later this evening the interns taught cyclists and fans of the WHAS news show hands only CPR during the races.  It was a productive day.
