The Start the Heart Foundation was started in 2014 with a mission of saving lives of cardiac arrest victims through education and training of hands only CPR. We take premedical students and train them in CPR and then they go into the community and teach hands-only CPR at no cost to the recipient. Each class lasts approximately 35-40 minutes time and involves performing actual hands only CPR on mannequins.
During the summer we have focused our efforts on teaching hands only CPR in the highest risk areas for cardiac arrest in Jefferson County, KY. We have taught at businesses, churches, bicycle races, community centers, private residences and basically anywhere with a gathering of at least 15 people. We have taught during the day, at night and on weekends. Our largest class was 90 people taught at one time and we are most comfortable with class sizes in the 20-30 people range.
During the school year our focus for teaching is a little different, during this time we focus on trying to teach every freshman in Jefferson County hands only CPR. We have actively worked with Jefferson County Public Schools, the private high schools and the parochial high schools. Why freshmen? We have found that this age group is physically and mentally able to comprehend and perform CPR. In addition, each freshman is required to take health class and this is an ideal environment to learn this basic life skill. Because our interns are full time students we are not as flexible to teaching at other times during the fall and spring.
In January, we have a unique situation with 5 students from DePauw University coming to Louisville to teach CPR full time during that month and we may have flexibility to teach at nights and weekends in addition to teaching in the schools during the day time.
We also offer a schedule CPR class on the second Thursday of each month at the office of Louisville Cardiology. The address is 3900 Kresge Way Suite 60. This office is located immediately adjacent to Baptist Hospital Louisville. The class is held at 5:00 pm and runs for about 40 minutes. These classes are open to the public at no cost.
If you are interested in being taught hands only CPR there are a couple of options. 1. Sign up to attend the monthly hands only CPR class held on the 2nd Thursday of each month. 2. If you are a school and would like to come and teach your freshmen students contact us through the website and we will get this scheduled. We are scheduling now for January. 3. If you have a group or business of 15 or more people that want to learn CPR contact us and we will try to schedule a time for us to come to your location and teach hands only CPR to you. Due to time constraints we may only be able to offer this in January and during the summer.
80% of cardiac arrests happen in a private residence. The person you may perform CPR on is likely someone that you know and love.
